What is remanufacturing and warranty exchange?

The terms Engineering, manufacturing and distribution makes sense to most people. However, remanufacturing and warranty exchange is not quite as intuitive a process. Here is a typical scenario:

  1. Imagine a retail customer is driving in their own car and they notice the speedometer/radio/other electromechanical component no longer works.
  2. The driver takes it to a car dealership for repair.
  3. The dealership takes the customer’s information, and starts a warranty claim if the vehicle is still under warranty. However, the dealership is not equipped to fix this problem because it is uncommon and requires special tools. So the dealership contacts ISS (either by phone or online) and orders a replacement component.
  4. ISS will process the warranty claim and bill the vehicle manufacturer or component supplier.
  5. ISS will ship a remanufactured component overnight (a component we have performed previous work on to make it function like new) to the dealership that the dealer can then install in the customer’s car.
  6. The dealer sends to ISS the “core,” or the radio/instrument cluster/other component that was removed from their customer’s car.
  7. ISS may elect to remanufacture that core for use for a future customer.
  8. This process is good for the environment and good for the dealer and end user. Rather than build new, in many cases remanufacturing is the way to go. Natural resources are saved and landfill waste reduced. A win-win for all.

A wide variety of companies can handle remanufacturing. However, only a few companies are chosen by vehicle manufacturers to perform Factory Authorized Remanufacturing and Warranty Service. This is because a remanufacturing center that performs this level of service must meet the quality standards and process requirements of that vehicle manufacturer.

ISS is one of a small handful of companies in the United States that is a Factory Authorized Remanufacturing and Warranty Exchange Center for General Motors.
